acclaimed (what is especially pointed at the promotion) position “the luminaries”, is definitely promising much more than offering. taking under the consideration the physical volume of the book (over 900 pages), there is an wide epic expected, meant as equivalent to the grand scale of time or abundance of events. instead, we get quite intimate criminal story with the plot that takes place on the timeline of about two months (while we also get knowledge about passing a month in just two following sentences). the intrique is forwarded mainly by discussions between dozen protagonists, who are talking between each other, and babbles a new secrets out one time per several dozen pages. thanks to placing the story in the interesting times and place – second half of ninieteenth century, gold rush, new zealand – the book is quite good readable, but after all – the dissonance between the promise and true offer of the book sounds gloomy, long yet after finishing of the reading.
